LONG ISLAND, NY — Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez’s journey to wrestling stardom is one of remarkable resilience and unshakable determination. At just 18 years old, the Long Island high school wrestler, who survived a brutal chimpanzee attack in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a child, is now a National High School Coaches Association champion in the 123-pound weight class, setting the stage for an exciting future at UNC Chapel Hill on a wrestling scholarship.

Sibomana-Rodriguez’s story began far from the wrestling mats. At 6 years old, he, his cousin, and his brother were attacked by a swarm of chimpanzees while living in Congo. Tragically, his cousin lost his life, while Sibomana-Rodriguez and his brother sustained severe injuries. Sibomana-Rodriguez lost a finger, and his face, lips, and right ear were severely damaged. The young survivor was later brought to the U.S. for medical treatment, where he underwent 16 surgeries, including facial reconstruction at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

Despite facing these tremendous challenges, Sibomana-Rodriguez’s life was about to change in ways he could never have imagined. After arriving in the U.S. and overcoming language barriers — he only spoke Swahili — Sibomana-Rodriguez was introduced to wrestling by his foster father, Miguel Rodriguez, the assistant coach at Long Beach High School. Before this moment, Sibomana-Rodriguez had never even heard of the sport. But once he stepped onto the mat, something clicked.

“I didn’t know much about it, but wrestling just felt right for me,” Sibomana-Rodriguez shared, and the results spoke for themselves. He quickly excelled, winning five Nassau County titles and three state championships before his national title in March. His wrestling prowess, combined with his academic success, is setting him on a path toward a promising future in finance.

Sibomana-Rodriguez’s high school teammate, Ethan Andrueli, described him as an inspiration. “He always kept a smile on his face, kept ignoring the bad stuff, and worked hard,” Andrueli said. His story is one of overcoming adversity, and Sibomana-Rodriguez hopes it will inspire others to follow their dreams despite the odds.

“Don’t let people determine who you are,” he said. “You should make your own story.”

As he continues his journey, Sibomana-Rodriguez is not only excelling in wrestling but also giving back to the community, coaching youth wrestlers in Long Beach alongside his adopted father. With dreams of becoming a finance professional and a legacy of resilience, Dunia Sibomana-Rodriguez is proving that the strength required to succeed doesn’t just come from physical prowess, but from the spirit to never give up.
